Conventions of Music Magazines

There are many different genres of music which are shown by having their own individual magazines. Whilst designing my pop magazine I will have to take into consideration whether or not there are certain conventions that I need to follow to make it easily distinguishable to other genres. I decided to list down the main genres and get ideas from existing media.

Pop (TOTP, WE <3 POP)
- design elements
- celebrity gossip (mostly pop artists)
- clothes (fashion tips)
- hair and beauty tips
- posters of artists
- vibrant colours
- puzzles/games/quizzes
- advice (relationships, problems)
- title colour can change with each issue

Rock (Kerrang!, Uncut)
- features on old albums, interviews with film directors, music (gigs/festivals) and film news, and reviews of all major new album, film and DVD releases
- explicit stories
- darker colours such as red and black
- artists with strong make up
- artists with tattoos
- seductive/ half naked dress
- posters

Alternative (NME, Mojo)
- features on: TV, tours, artists, music countdown, reviews
- posters
- title colour usually stays the same (red for NME)
